life in text and stereo sound...
DJ Hatfield is a sociocultural anthropologist and sound installation artist. His work focuses on sound, indigenous responses to colonialism, and the ethics of locality: the ways that place becomes an ethical substance and the kinds of claims that place might make upon us. More simply put, in a life marked by displacement, Hatfield asks questions about how we know when we are in place, at home. In addition to his work, Hatifled is an avid shape note singer and brewer. The Taiwan Soundscapes Project is an emerging project aimed at more than documentation. Although much of the project does include sound recording, it also hopes to pose larger quetions about the role of sound in contemporary Taiwan and elsewhere. Visit the Taiwan Soundscapes Blog
The only river to cross the Coastal Mountain Range on Taiwan's Pacific Coast, the Siugulan River has long been a mediating space between ecological zones, ethnic groups, and life forms. This project, supported by the Asian Cultural Council, explores the river through recording, sound installation art, and a sound map. Listen to the river together at the Pasasiikor to Taradaw sound map
Hatfield's current writing projects include "Harbors, Houses, and Hope," a monograph on the influence of the far ocean fishing trade on the soundscapes and townscapes of 'Amis / Pangcah communities on Taiwan's Pacific Coast. For updates on this project see DJ Hatfield's blog or Academia.edu page
