recently, i’ve been working on a paper for a panel with a few friends from back in chicago, who have a common post-grad school experience of working with and teaching artists. here at the berklee college of music, i’ve been teaching musicians. i also work closely with songwriters in my fieldwork. the perilous intersections of our practices thus keeps me thinking, whether at berklee or in taitung<\/p>\n
\u6700\u8fd1\u6536\u5230\u829d\u52a0\u54e5\u540c\u5b78\u7684\u9080\u8acb\uff0c\u53c3\u52a0\u4e00\u500b\u95dc\u65bc\u85dd\u8853\u8ddf\u4eba\u985e\u5b78\u7684\u4ea4\u53c9\u9ede\u7684\u5c0f\u7814\u8a0e\u6703\uff0c\u6536\u9080\u8acb\u7684\u540c\u5b78\uff0c\u90fd\u6709\u7562\u696d\u5f8c\u7684\u5171\u540c\u9ede\uff1a\u6211\u5011\u5728\u6559\u5b78\u548c\u7814\u7a76\u4e0a\uff0c\u8ddf\u85dd\u8853\u5bb6\u7684\u63a5\u89f8\u9817\u591a\uff0c\u6bd4\u5982\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u8ddf\u6b4c\u624b\u6709\u95dc\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u5728\u4f2f\u514b\u674e\u97f3\u6a02\u5b78\u9662\u4efb\u6559\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u4eba\u985e\u5b78\u7814\u7a76\u5be6\u8e10\u5982\u4f55\u63a5\u8fd1\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u7684\u5be6\u8e10\uff0c\u6210\u70ba\u6211\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u7684\u5c0d\u8c61\u4e4b\u4e00\u3002\u6211\u6df1\u6df1\u611f\u5230\uff0c\u6b4c\u624b\u548c\u4eba\u985e\u5b78\u5b78\u8005\uff0c\u61c9\u8a72\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u7684\u8a71\u984c\u53ef\u4ee5\u804a\uff0c\u66f4\u9032\u4e00\u6b65\u8aaa\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u4e92\u76f8\u5b78\u7fd2\u7684\u7a7a\u9593\uff0c\u986f\u8005\u5f88\u5927\u3002\u8981\u5982\u4f55\u5be6\u73fe\u4eba\u985e\u5b78\u548c\u4f5c\u66f2\u7684\u5c0d\u8a71\uff1f\u9019\u4e5f\u662f\u503c\u5f97\u63a2\u8a0e\u7684\u554f\u984c<\/p>\n
i’m convinced that songwriters and ethnographers have a great deal to talk about and to learn from each other. figuring out how to facilitate this conversation has become one of my questions as i teach and do research<\/p>\n
i have three basic areas where i think this conversation could occur, drawing from the practices of songwriters: by restraint<\/em>, i mean both a kind of reticence and an ability to keep within the boundaries imposed by genre, form, and voice. songwriters, unless named gordon lightfoot, have to capture an entire social situation through fragments of conversation or powerful images. their art depends on attentiveness and a kind of restraint through which they keep from saying too much<\/p>\n by registration<\/em>, i mean the exploration of different social worlds through registering these worlds in sonic traces, particularly in a register that allows the songwriter to embody a perspective from that world<\/p>\n response<\/em> refers to work that does not represent or even describe another social world but that provides a personal reflection, in which the songwriter leaves space for the listener to register this world without attempting to contain or speak for the Other. I’d like to explore this area more, as it seems to provide an avenue for deeper conversations between songwriters and anthropologists. see the attached pdf or listen to the podcast of my talk, “alone of the beach?
